Electric Generators
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Carbon monoxide poisoning when using the generator in enclosed spaces or near ventilation openings.
- Electric shock due to improper connections, damaged cables, moisture or wet equipment.
- Fire or explosion from incorrect handling of fuels, leaks or flammable vapours.
- Burns from contact with high-temperature surfaces, silencer and exhaust gases.
- Damage to connected devices and to the generator itself due to overload or voltage spikes.
- Dangerous backfeed into the electrical installation if connected without a suitable changeover system.
- Exposure to noise and vibrations that can affect hearing and cause fatigue.
- Increased risk in rain or snow due to water ingress, corrosion and short circuits.
- Tipping or entrapment during movement, loading or transport.
Safe use
- Always operate outdoors and in well-ventilated areas; keep it away from doors, windows and air intakes.
- Place on a firm, level and stable surface, leaving space around the exhaust and ventilation grilles.
- Keep the equipment dry; do not use in rain without a purpose-designed shelter that does not obstruct ventilation or the exhaust.
- Use outdoor-rated cables and extension leads with sufficient capacity; fully unwind them and avoid improvised joins.
- Start and stop with no loads connected; connect essential appliances first and avoid overloading the generator.
- Do not connect directly to the household installation; use a suitable changeover system installed by qualified personnel.
- Keep a safe distance from combustible materials; do not cover the generator while operating.
- Refuel only with the engine off and cool, outdoors and away from sparks or flames; clean up any spillage immediately.
- Protect hearing and hands as appropriate (ear defenders and work gloves).
- Shut down the unit if you notice fuel odours, abnormal noises, sparks or excessive vibration.
Storage and maintenance
- Store in a dry, ventilated place, out of the reach of children; keep away from sources of heat and ignition.
- Keep fuel in suitable containers, closed and labelled; do not store inside dwellings or next to the generator.
- For prolonged periods without use, follow the manufacturer's instructions on draining the fuel or using a stabiliser.
- Keep the grilles and the area around the exhaust clean; remove dust and debris that could obstruct ventilation.
- Regularly inspect cables, plugs, mounts and casing; replace damaged components before use.
- Perform the maintenance specified by the manufacturer (oil, filter, spark plug, battery) with the engine off and cool.
- Disconnect the spark plug lead or the starting system before any intervention to prevent accidental start-up.
- For transport, keep it upright, securely fastened and, where fitted, with valves or caps closed; avoid spills and tip-overs.
Restrictions of use
- Do not use indoors, in garages, basements, caravans, storage rooms or partially enclosed spaces.
- Do not allow use by minors; keep children and pets away during operation and while cooling down.
- Do not connect to the public grid or to the fixed installation without a suitable changeover system installed by qualified personnel.
- Do not operate with wet hands, on waterlogged floors or barefoot.
- Do not refuel or handle fuel with the engine running or hot; do not smoke nearby.
- Do not cover the generator or obstruct the exhaust; do not use it inside enclosures, tents or closed car boots.
- Do not modify the equipment or bypass protections, circuit breakers or safety devices.
- Do not power critical life-support equipment without dedicated systems and verification of compatibility.
- Do not connect sensitive electronic devices without first checking compatibility and the stability of the output voltage.
- Do not move or transport the generator while it is running.
