Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Severe cuts from contact with moving blades.
  • Stones, sticks and other objects being thrown at high speed.
  • Roll-over, entrapment or run-over incidents with tractors, especially on slopes and when reversing.
  • Loss of traction and slips or falls on wet grass or uneven ground.
  • Burns from hot engine and exhaust surfaces.
  • Exposure to high noise levels and prolonged vibration.
  • Electrical hazard with corded or battery-powered equipment (damaged cables, moisture, short circuits).
  • Fire or poisoning from fuel and exhaust gases in enclosed spaces.
  • Entrapment of hands, feet, clothing or hair in moving parts.
  • Injury when attempting to clear the discharge chute or blade by hand.

Safe use

  • Inspect the area and remove stones, branches, toys and cables before starting.
  • Check guards, deflectors, grass collector and shut-off systems; do not use the equipment if any safety device is missing or faulty.
  • Wear closed, non-slip footwear, eye and hearing protection; avoid loose clothing and tie back hair.
  • Start only in clear areas, with the blade disengaged; keep hands and feet away from the cutting area.
  • Do not work in rain or with soaked grass; for corded equipment, keep the cable behind you and visible, using outdoor-rated extension leads.
  • For batteries: use compatible chargers, charge in a ventilated place and remove the battery before any maintenance.
  • For petrol: refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool; clean up spills and keep ignition sources away.
  • If the discharge chute or blade becomes blocked, switch off, wait for a complete stop, disconnect the spark plug lead or battery and clear the blockage with a tool, never by hand.
  • With tractors: adjust speed, avoid sharp turns and take extra care on slopes; look behind before reversing; do not carry passengers.
  • Maintain a safe distance from people, pets and windows; stop the blade when crossing gravel or moving between areas.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean the machine after use and store it in a dry place, out of the reach of children and with the starter locked or the key removed.
  • Disconnect the spark plug lead or remove the battery before changing, sharpening or cleaning the blade; wear cut-resistant gloves when handling blades.
  • Do not use high-pressure water on the engine, bearings or electrical connections; remove grass residues with a brush or scraper.
  • Periodically check fasteners, wheels, belts, brakes and shut-off systems; replace worn parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Inspect cables, plugs and housings; do not use the equipment if there are cracks, cuts or loose connections.
  • Store fuels in suitable, closed and vented containers, away from heat and flames; if the equipment will not be used for a prolonged period, drain or stabilise the fuel following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight; do not leave them connected to the charger indefinitely.
  • Always charge on a stable, non-flammable surface, with ventilation and without covering the charger.

Restrictions of use

  • For outdoor use on grass only; do not use indoors, in garages or in poorly ventilated spaces, especially with combustion engines.
  • Do not allow minors or persons unfamiliar with the equipment to operate it; keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Do not use the equipment under the influence of alcohol, drugs or when fatigued.
  • Avoid working on excessive slopes, very uneven ground or near ditches, the edges of water and embankments.
  • Do not modify the equipment or disable safety devices or interlocks.
  • Do not use the lawnmower to cut shrubs, branches, stones or woody weeds; do not use it to push or pull objects.
  • Do not tow accessories or loads with tractors unless they are compatible and within the limits recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Do not operate at night or in poor visibility unless you have adequate lighting and signage.
  • For electric equipment, do not use damaged extension leads or connect to wet sockets; avoid stepping on or straining the cable.
  • Stop work if you notice abnormal noises, unusual vibrations or a burning smell, and inspect before continuing.
