Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Electric shock due to the use of unsuitable or damaged adaptors or cables.
  • Overheating and even risk of fire if the vents are covered or if placed near heat sources.
  • Device falling and injury if the wall or ceiling mounting is not secure.
  • Trips and pulls caused by loose or poorly routed cabling.
  • Damage from liquids, moisture or condensation.
  • Voltage surges during storms or from unstable electrical installations.
  • Interference and loss of service if installed next to other equipment that emits strong signals.
  • Unauthorised access to the network if default passwords and settings are left in place.

Safe use

  • Use only compatible power adaptors and cables; do not force connectors and replace any damaged components.
  • Place the device on a stable surface or mount it following the manufacturer's instructions; ensure the fixings support the weight and do not hang the device by the cable.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation: do not cover the vents or enclose it in spaces without air circulation.
  • Keep the access point away from heat, flames, direct sunlight, vapour and splashes.
  • Organise cabling with cable ties or trunking, avoiding walkways to reduce trip hazards and pulls.
  • During prolonged electrical storms, disconnect from mains power and external lines where possible; consider surge protection.
  • Set strong passwords and encryption on the network; change default credentials and disable any remote access you do not need.
  • If using Power over Ethernet (PoE), verify compatibility between the access point and the switch or injector.
  • Do not open or modify the device.

Storage and maintenance

  • Disconnect the device from the mains before cleaning.
  • Wipe off dust with a dry or slightly damp cloth; do not use aerosols or apply liquids directly onto the device.
  • Avoid inserting objects into the vents.
  • Store and transport the device in a dry, ventilated place and protected from knocks; use the original packaging where possible.
  • Do not over-bend the cables and periodically check their condition and that of the connectors.
  • Check from time to time that the device is not overheating and that wall or ceiling fixings remain secure.
  • Update the device software from official sources when recommended by the manufacturer and periodically review the security settings.

Restrictions on use

  • Indoor use in dry environments only, unless the product explicitly indicates it is suitable for outdoor use.
  • Keep the device and cables out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use the equipment in areas with high humidity, potentially explosive atmospheres or near flammable materials.
  • Do not cover the device with textiles or place it in enclosed cabinets without ventilation.
  • Do not use the product if the casing, adaptor or cables show visible damage.
  • Avoid placing it next to areas of prolonged occupancy such as bed headboards or cots; an elevated, well-ventilated location is usually more appropriate.
  • Installation, connection and configuration changes should be carried out by adults familiar with electronic and networking equipment.
