Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Inhalation of litter dust or fragrances, which may cause irritation in cats and sensitive individuals.
- Accidental ingestion of litter, especially by kittens, with possible gastrointestinal upset.
- Build-up of odours and ammonia if not cleaned regularly, with possible respiratory discomfort.
- Slips from litter scattered around the litter tray.
- Minor trapping/pinching from flap doors or moving parts on covered or automatic models.
- Electrical and splash hazards in automatic litter trays if placed in damp areas.
- Exposure to germs present in faeces; added risk for pregnant women and immunocompromised people.
- Choking hazard from plastic bags used to line or dispose of litter if left within reach of children or pets.
Safe use
- Place the litter tray in a stable, well-ventilated, quiet and easily accessible location for the cat, away from food and water.
- Choose a litter suited to the cat's age and sensitivity; for kittens, non-clumping and low-fragrance litter is usually preferred.
- Remove waste daily and clean the litter tray regularly using lukewarm water and a mild detergent; rinse and dry thoroughly before refilling.
- Do not mix cleaning products or use irritant substances; avoid combining bleach with ammonia or other chemicals.
- Place a litter-trapping mat and sweep up spilled litter to reduce the risk of slips.
- If the litter tray has a lid or door, ensure there is adequate ventilation and that the door does not jam.
- On automatic models, unplug before cleaning, lock the cycle while the cat is nearby and keep fingers away from moving parts.
- Wash your hands after each clean; wear gloves if you have cuts on your skin or sensitivity.
Storage and maintenance
- Store bags of litter in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children and pets.
- Avoid placing the litter tray next to heat sources, strong draughts or damp areas.
- Check periodically for cracks, sharp edges or loose parts and replace the litter tray if damaged.
- If the model includes filters or other replacements, replace them at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer.
- Dispose of used litter in a sealed bag and in the appropriate bin; do not flush it down the toilet.
- Dry the litter tray completely after cleaning to prevent mould and bad odours.
- For electric litter trays, protect the cable and adaptor from splashes and chewing; do not use the product if you notice damage to the wiring.
Usage restrictions
- Not a toy: keep the litter tray and accessories out of reach of young children and prevent them from playing with the litter.
- Do not use the litter tray outdoors unless the product explicitly indicates it; protect from rain and frost.
- Do not sit, place weight on or stand on the litter tray; it could break.
- Do not use bags, liners or accessories that block ventilation or interfere with doors or automatic mechanisms.
- Do not use caustic, ammonia-based or heavily perfumed cleaners that may irritate the cat.
- Pregnant women and immunocompromised people should not handle faeces without protection; if unavoidable, wear gloves and a mask and wash hands thoroughly.
- Do not allow an automatic litter tray to cycle with the cat inside or nearby; supervise curious pets.
- Do not mix or switch abruptly to a different type of litter if it generates excessive dust or causes the cat to reject it.
