Bed Sheets

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Risk of suffocation in babies and young children if loose sheets cover the face or become entangled.
  • Burns or fire from contact with flames, cigarettes, candles or hot appliances.
  • Skin irritation or allergies caused by fibres, dyes or detergent residues, especially if not washed before first use.
  • Slips and falls if the sheet comes loose, drags on the floor or is stepped on when getting out of bed.
  • Mould and unpleasant odours if stored damp or in excessively humid environments.
  • Minor pinches or knocks from elastic recoil when fitting fitted sheets.
  • Colour transfer to other garments, the mattress or sleepwear during the first few washes.
  • Overheating when using too many layers in warm environments.

Safe use

  • Choose the correct size for the mattress and secure the corners well; if it does not fit, do not force it into place.
  • In cots and Moses baskets, use only a correctly sized fitted sheet, pulled tight and with no loose bedding around.
  • Keep sheets away from flames, cigarettes, candles and heaters; do not iron on the bed.
  • Wash before first use and follow the care label instructions; rinse thoroughly to remove detergent residues.
  • Handle the elastic carefully when putting on or removing the fitted sheet to avoid sudden recoil.
  • Tuck in the edges so they do not drag on the floor and reduce the risk of tripping.
  • If the colour is deep, wash separately the first few times and use a mattress protector to minimise colour transfer.
  • Adjust the number of layers to the room temperature to avoid excess heat, especially for children and older adults.
  • Remove and dispose of plastic packaging out of the reach of children.

Storage and maintenance

  • Wash with similar colours and observe the recommended temperatures and cycles; avoid bleach or fabric softeners unless indicated.
  • Dry completely before folding or storing; do not leave damp sheets in the washing machine.
  • Air the bed and change sheets regularly to reduce mites, dust and odours.
  • Store in a clean, dry, ventilated place, protected from direct sunlight; avoid airtight bags unless they are completely dry.
  • Check seams and elastics regularly; replace the sheet if these are stretched or broken.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with cosmetics, oils or products that may stain or degrade the fabric.
  • Iron at the temperature indicated on the care label and allow to cool before stacking or storing.
  • Do not overload the washing machine or tumble dryer to prevent abrasion and deformation.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use as a rope, restraint or for purposes other than rest.
  • Do not use loose sheets, blankets or pillows in cots or Moses baskets; keep the baby's sleep surface clear.
  • Keep bags and packaging out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use if they show dampness, mould, tears, overstretched elastics or strong odours.
  • Avoid use if there is a known allergy to certain fibres or dyes; choose suitable alternatives.
  • Do not place in direct contact with heat sources or devices that emit heat.
  • If skin irritation occurs, discontinue use and consider changing the detergent or fabric.
