Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Electric shock from damaged power leads, loose plugs or improper handling.
- Overheating and even fire if vents are obstructed or dust accumulates.
- Damage to connected equipment due to voltage spikes, lightning storms or unprotected sockets.
- Snagging and tripping due to messy or poorly routed cable runs.
- Wear to ports and connectors from forcing RJ45 plugs or removing them by pulling on the cable.
- Risk of eye injury from looking directly into active optical ports (if the equipment uses SFP/optical modules).
- Risk of excessive heating or failures if the power budget on PoE ports is exceeded.
Safe use
- Place the switch on a stable surface or mount it properly on a rack/wall, leaving clearance around the vents and fans.
- Use only the power adaptor and cables recommended by the manufacturer; do not use frayed, pinched or loose-connector cables.
- Connect to an earthed socket and, where possible, use surge protection or a UPS.
- Keep cables tidy with guides or ties, avoiding walkways and preventing tension on the ports.
- Do not force connectors: insert and remove RJ45s by holding the plug, never by pulling the cable.
- Avoid covering the unit with fabrics, papers or other items; do not place it next to heat sources or in direct sunlight.
- If the switch provides PoE, connect only to compatible devices and avoid exceeding the unit's power budget.
- With optical modules or ports, do not look inside, fit dust caps when not in use and observe the fibres' bend radius.
- During electrical storms, disconnect the unit from the mains if you do not have adequate protection.
Storage and maintenance
- Store the equipment in a dry, ventilated place, away from moisture, excessive dust and extreme temperatures.
- Before cleaning or moving the switch, power it off and unplug it from the mains.
- Periodically remove dust with a dry cloth or low-pressure air; do not use liquids or aerosols, and do not insert objects through the vents.
- Regularly check cables and connectors; replace immediately any that show cuts, severe kinks or broken latches.
- Listen for any unusual fan noise and make sure the vents are not obstructed; on models with filters, clean them following the manufacturer's instructions.
- If it will not be used for an extended period, disconnect it, cover it to prevent dust, and store the adaptor separately.
Restrictions on use
- Do not use the switch outdoors or in areas with condensation, splashes or steam (unless the model is designed for it).
- Do not open the enclosure or attempt internal repairs; there is a risk of electric shock and damage to the equipment.
- Do not cover the switch or install it in enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation (sealed cabinets, drawers).
- Do not connect incompatible PoE injectors, adaptors or accessories, nor modify cables.
- Do not use the equipment if you notice a burning smell, sparks, unusual heat or damaged casing; disconnect it and remove it from service.
- Keep the switch and accessories out of the reach of young children; it is not a toy and is not intended to be handled by them.
