Safety warnings and precautions
Key risks
- Cuts and scratches from sharp edges and file teeth, or from the tang if it has no handle.
- Flying particles, dust and splinters towards the eyes and face during sanding or filing.
- Inhalation of fine dust (wood, paint, metal) that may irritate the airways or skin.
- Creation of burrs and sharp edges on the workpiece, with a risk of cuts when handling it.
- Surface heating due to friction, causing discomfort or minor burns.
- Breakage of the abrasive or chipping of the file due to excessive force or improper use.
- Build-up of dry, combustible dust, posing a risk if sparks or flames are nearby.
Safe use
- Wear safety goggles and a suitable dust mask/respirator; consider close-fitting, abrasion-resistant gloves if they do not compromise control of the tool.
- Secure the workpiece firmly with clamps or on a workbench; work with controlled strokes and move the tool away from your body.
- For files, always fit a solid handle that fully covers the tang.
- Choose an appropriate grit and avoid applying excessive force; let the abrasive do the work.
- Work in well-ventilated areas and, if possible, with local extraction; avoid blowing dust with your mouth or with compressed air.
- Keep fingers away from edges; use sanding blocks or holders to improve grip and protect your hands.
- Inspect before use: discard torn or heavily worn sandpaper, and files that are bent, cracked or have badly worn teeth.
- Remove burrs and clean the work area before handling the finished piece.
Storage and maintenance
- Store in a clean, dry place; moisture will rust files and degrade sandpaper adhesives.
- Keep sandpaper sheets flat and crease-free; avoid weights or folds that could break the backing.
- Protect files from impacts and from contact with each other to avoid dulling the teeth; use sleeves or separators.
- Clean files with a dedicated brush and de-clog the sandpaper with a suitable cleaner to extend its service life.
- Remove dust by extraction and dispose of it in a suitable container; do not let it build up or spread.
- Keep products and dust away from heat sources, flames and sparks.
- Dry and store tools after use to prevent corrosion and deterioration.
Restrictions on use
- Do not use these sandpapers and files on machines or power tools unless the product is clearly specified for that use.
- Do not use files without a handle or sandpaper that is damaged, cracked or with the abrasive peeling.
- Do not use these tools as a lever, chisel, hammer or for cutting.
- Do not sand unknown or potentially hazardous coatings without effective dust control and suitable protection.
- Do not work near open flames, sparks, flammable vapours or in poorly ventilated spaces.
- Do not handle the workpiece immediately after sanding if it is hot; allow it to cool.
- Keep out of reach of children; use by minors only under adult supervision.
