Warnings and Safety Precautions
Main Risks
- Ejection of fragments or swarf due to bit tip breakage or slipping on the screw head.
- Cuts and knocks from tool slippage or loss of control.
- Overheating of the bit after repeated use, with a risk of burns.
- Damage to screws, workpiece or bit holder from using an incorrect size or profile, or excessive torque.
- Ejection of the bit if not properly secured in the bit holder or in the chuck.
- Attraction of metallic particles and possible interference with medical implants when using magnetised bits.
- Electrical hazard when working near live conductors with bits without specific insulation.
Safe Use
- Choose the exact profile and size for the screw head; an accurate match reduces slippage.
- Inspect the bit before use: discard it if you see rounding, cracks, nicks or deformation.
- Fully seat the bit in the bit holder and check it is locked; disconnect the tool or remove the battery when changing bits.
- Clamp or secure the workpiece and keep hands clear of the area of rotation.
- Work at appropriate speed and torque; use the clutch setting if available and apply constant axial pressure, avoiding side loads.
- For impact tools, use only impact-rated bits; do not use standard bits with impact wrenches or impact drivers.
- Wear safety glasses; close-fitting gloves can help prevent cuts, avoiding any loose material that could snag.
- Stop and let the bit cool if it overheats; do not touch it immediately after prolonged use.
- Keep the bit and magnet free of swarf and dust to improve grip and reduce slippage.
Storage and Maintenance
- Store bits clean and dry in their case to prevent corrosion and knocks.
- Clean after each use by removing metal filings and dirt; dry thoroughly if they have been exposed to moisture.
- Organise by type and size to avoid mix-ups and damage to the drive profiles.
- Do not sand, grind or modify the geometry of the bit; this can weaken it and increase the risk of breakage.
- Remove from service any bits with visible wear, chipped edges, or that do not seat firmly in the screw.
- Keep magnetised bits away from devices sensitive to magnetic fields and from objects that could be attracted inadvertently.
Restrictions of Use
- Do not use bits for prying, striking, drilling or as a punch; they are designed solely for driving screws.
- Do not work on energised circuits unless the bit and the tool are specifically insulated and rated for it.
- Keep bits and tools out of the reach of children and people unfamiliar with their use.
- When working at height, use bit and screw retention systems to prevent dropped objects.
- People with electronic implants should keep their distance from magnetised bits and bit holders and avoid placing them near the chest.
