Aquarium Decor Ornaments

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Water alterations caused by unsuitable materials (limestone in freshwater, treated woods) that may alter pH or hardness.
  • Edges, burrs or sharp surfaces that can injure fish or anyone handling the aquarium.
  • Entrapment in caves, tunnels or holes that are too narrow for certain species.
  • Toppling or falling of heavy pieces that could damage the glass, the substrate or the animals.
  • Blockage of the filter, heater or water circulation, creating low-oxygen areas.
  • Peeling or shedding of paints or coatings due to use or improper cleaning.
  • Suction cups or fixings that come loose, and small parts that may detach or be ingested by fish.
  • Build-up of algae and biofilm if periodic cleaning is not performed, affecting water quality.

Safe use

  • Choose decorations specifically labelled as aquarium-safe and suitable for the type of water (freshwater or marine) you use.
  • Rinse pieces thoroughly before first use to remove dust or residues; do not use soaps or detergents.
  • Check edges and points; gently sand accessible burrs and remove loose parts before placing in the aquarium.
  • Test stability outside the aquarium; distribute the weight and avoid resting hard points directly on the glass.
  • Leave sufficient clearance to the filter inlets and outlets and to the heater so as not to block the flow or fish access.
  • Match the size of caves and holes to your species to prevent fish becoming stuck; if in doubt, opt for wider entrances.
  • For natural woods, pre-soak so they sink and observe whether they release tannins; remove if they leach excessive colour.
  • Introduce decoration changes gradually and under dim lighting to reduce fish stress.
  • If the piece requires air, light or other accessories, follow the manufacturer's instructions and check connections out of the water.
  • Wash and dry your hands before working inside the aquarium; avoid creams or products that could contaminate the water.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean periodically with a soft brush and water; avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives that could damage the material.
  • Remove algae and sediment without scratching the surface; siphon away dirt that has built up around the pieces.
  • Inspect for cracks, chipping, rust or abnormal discolouration; replace the piece if it shows deterioration.
  • Check suction cups and fixings regularly; replace them if they lose adhesion to prevent falls.
  • After introducing new rocks or wood, monitor the water parameters for the first few days; if they change noticeably, remove the piece.
  • Store decorations clean and completely dry, in a cool, shaded place, away from heat sources and direct light.
  • Protect fragile pieces during storage to prevent breakage and keep everything out of reach of children and pets.

Restrictions of use

  • Do not use objects not designed for aquariums (unprotected metals, unsuitable paints, household ornaments) inside the tank.
  • Do not boil or bake decorations to disinfect them; some materials may break or release substances.
  • Do not place pieces on the heater or block the filter's inlets or outlets.
  • Do not overload the aquarium with too many elements; leave swimming areas and access for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Do not use with large or digging species if the decoration cannot be secured safely.
  • Do not introduce pieces with strong chemical odours or that leach colour persistently.
  • Do not allow minors to handle heavy or fragile decorations without adult supervision.
