Aquarium Substrate (Sand and Gravel)
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Fine dust that can cloud the water and irritate fish gills.
- Grain size or angular edges that can chafe or injure bottom-dwelling fish and snails.
- Fine particles that may clog filters or pumps, or be drawn into equipment.
- Some materials or colourants could alter water parameters or leach/bleed if not rinsed properly.
- Minor cuts to the skin, or eye and respiratory irritation when handling and pouring the product.
- Risk of ingestion or choking for children and household pets.
- Build-up of waste and anoxic zones beneath very deep layers, causing bad odours and deteriorating water quality.
- Scratches on glass or acrylic if rubbed firmly against the panels during cleaning.
Safe use
- Rinse the gravel or sand in a bucket with clean water until the water runs clear, removing dust.
- Add to the aquarium slowly, preferably with the water partially drained and by pouring over a plate or bag to reduce turbulence.
- Switch off the filter and heater when introducing or moving the substrate; switch them back on when the water is clear.
- Spread in an even layer without striking the glass; avoid excessively deep layers unless they are aerated or periodically stirred.
- Do not use soaps, detergents or disinfectants to clean the substrate.
- After installation, observe water clarity, odour and fish behaviour; carry out partial water changes if necessary.
- Temporarily protect the filter intake with a fine sponge at the start to prevent it drawing in particles.
- During maintenance, gently siphon the surface; do not disturb the entire substrate at once to avoid imbalances.
- Wash hands after handling and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin or dust allergies.
Storage and maintenance
- Store unused product in its original packaging, tightly closed, in a dry place away from moisture.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Avoid contamination with soil, detergents, insecticides or other substances not intended for aquarium use.
- If any substrate remains open, seal and label it; check before use that there are no unusual odours or foreign objects.
- Do not store used, wet substrate in airtight containers; if removed, rinse and allow to air-dry.
- For periodic cleaning, use an aquarium siphon; avoid very hot water and do not boil the substrate.
- After adding or moving substrate, check that the filter and pumps are operating without noise or blockages.
- Dispose of dust and residues in the bin; do not pour them down the drain to avoid blockages.
Restrictions of use
- Intended only for aquariums and aquatic terrariums; not suitable for consumption or food use.
- Do not use as pet litter, in children's play areas, or in swimming pool filtration systems.
- Avoid very fine-grained substrates with undergravel filters or very powerful pumps if they may clog; check compatibility with your equipment.
- If there are species that are especially sensitive to abrasion, avoid angular grains and choose smooth textures.
- Do not mix with chemicals, perfumes, scented salts or materials not designed for aquarium use.
- Do not heat in a microwave or oven, or 'sterilise' with boiling water.
- Do not crush or sand the material to alter its size; minimise unnecessary dust during handling.
- Children should handle the product only under adult supervision.
