Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Flammability: most fabrics can ignite easily if close to flames or high temperatures.
  • Suffocation and strangulation: loose cloths, straps or cords can cover the face or become entangled, especially for babies, children and pets.
  • Trips and falls due to trailing fabrics on floors, stairs or corridors.
  • Colour transfer that may stain other garments, upholstery or surfaces, especially when damp.
  • Skin irritation or respiratory discomfort in sensitive individuals due to dust, lint or fabric finishes.
  • Mould and unpleasant odours if they remain damp or are stored without ventilation.
  • Pricks or cuts when handling pins, needles or scissors during sewing.
  • Shrinkage or distortion after washing that affects the fit of covers, curtains or other projects.

Safe use

  • Keep fabrics away from candles, cookers, hobs, fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources.
  • Wash or air the fabric before first use where possible to reduce lint and excess dye.
  • Check colourfastness on an inconspicuous area and wash strong colours separately the first few times.
  • Cut on a stable surface, collect offcuts and threads immediately, and dispose of them safely to prevent ingestion by children or pets.
  • Secure hanging fabrics properly with systems suitable for the weight and avoid blocking walkways, power sockets or ventilation outlets.
  • Do not cover electrical appliances, vents or detectors with fabric.
  • In cots and children’s sleeping areas, avoid loose fabrics; use secure fastenings and keep fabric away from the baby’s face.
  • Iron at a temperature appropriate to the fabric type and, if in doubt, test first on a scrap or use a pressing cloth.
  • If you notice irritation or a persistent strong odour, ventilate, wash and limit direct skin contact.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store fabrics clean and completely dry in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Fold or roll without over-compressing; use breathable covers to protect from dust.
  • Protect against moths and insects and check periodically for moisture or stains.
  • Avoid placing heavy loads on top to prevent permanent marks or deformation.
  • Separate by colours to prevent dye migration during storage.
  • Follow the supplier’s care instructions where provided; avoid bleaches or solvents unsuitable for textiles.
  • Dry thoroughly after washing or after a spill to prevent mould.
  • Keep sewing tools and small accessories stored separately and out of reach of children and pets.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not use the fabric for restraint, load-bearing or safety purposes (ropes, harnesses, improvised hammocks, etc.).
  • Do not use it to cover heat sources, hobs, stoves or barbecues, nor as a fire barrier.
  • Do not cover smoke detectors, air vents or devices that need to dissipate heat.
  • Do not use fabrics not designed for outdoor use exposed to the elements for prolonged periods.
  • Do not use the fabric for direct food contact or for filtering liquids or air unless expressly indicated by the manufacturer.
  • Do not leave loose fabrics in cots, children's beds or playpens without supervision.
  • Do not allow children or pets to play with offcuts, cords or balls of yarn.
  • Do not use the fabric in poorly ventilated areas if it is visibly damp, mouldy or has a strong odour.
