Usage Warnings

Shoe Trees and Stretchers

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Pinched fingers or hands when operating screws, levers or springs on the stretchers.
  • Damage to footwear from excessive pressure: burst seams, cracks in delicate finishes, or permanent deformation.
  • Internal marks or chafing if the expansion pieces are badly positioned or have sharp edges.
  • Splinters from damaged wooden shoe trees or minor cuts from unfinished metal components.
  • Discolouration or skin irritation if combined with sprays or creams without prior testing.
  • Mould and unpleasant odours if inserted into very damp shoes without adequate ventilation.
  • Trip hazard if shoe trees or loose parts are left on the floor.

Safe use

  • Choose a model and size compatible with the type of footwear and its shape; do not force it in if you encounter unusual resistance.
  • Check before use that there are no bent screws, loose parts, sharp edges or splinters.
  • Make adjustments gradually, in small increments, and stop applying pressure if you hear creaking or notice excessive tension.
  • Observe left/right orientation where applicable, and centre the expansion points properly to distribute the pressure.
  • Protect delicate materials by placing a thin cloth between the footwear and any metal or hard plastic parts.
  • Do not use direct heat (hairdryer, radiator) to speed up stretching or to dry the footwear while the device is fitted.
  • If using stretching products or conditioners, apply sparingly, ventilate the area, and test first on an inconspicuous area; avoid contact with skin and eyes.
  • Monitor the time of use and do not leave the shoe trees or stretchers in place longer than recommended by the manufacturer.
  • To remove, release the tension first and hold the footwear with one hand to prevent sudden movements.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store shoe trees and stretchers clean and completely dry, in a ventilated place away from sources of heat and extreme humidity.
  • After using them with liquid products, wipe away any residue and dry the surfaces and threads thoroughly.
  • Keep threaded mechanisms and joints clean; if necessary, apply light lubrication in line with the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Inspect periodically for cracks, splinters or loose parts; stop using the product if you detect damage.
  • Avoid stacking weight on top that could deform the parts.
  • Store small accessories (plugs, adaptors) in a bag or box so they are not lost, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

Restrictions of use

  • Do not use on waterlogged footwear; allow excess moisture to dissipate and ventilate before inserting or expanding.
  • Avoid use on materials that do not tolerate stretching or are very sensitive (patent leather, varnished finishes, delicate textiles, leathers with special coatings) unless permitted by the footwear manufacturer.
  • Do not use as a lever, wedge or tool for other tasks.
  • Do not use on shoes with pre-existing damage (split seams, detached soles, cracks) until they have been repaired.
  • Do not combine with solvents, intense heat or products not intended for footwear.
  • Product intended for adult use; keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Not intended for medical use nor for modifying orthopaedic footwear.
