Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Falls from height and through fragile or poorly supported panels.
- Crushing or impact when handling long, heavy panels.
- Cuts from sharp metal edges.
- Slips on wet, icy or dusty surfaces.
- Unexpected wind uplift during transport or installation.
- Flying particles and irritating dust when cutting or drilling.
- Electrical risk due to proximity to overhead lines or concealed wiring.
- Burns from panels becoming hot on the surface in strong sunlight.
- Fire when working with open flames or sparks near combustible materials.
Safe use
- Plan work at height with anchor points, a harness and safe access; use stable platforms and guardrails where possible.
- Avoid installing in high winds, rain, snow or ice; stop if conditions change.
- Do not step directly on the panels unless expressly indicated; use load-spreading boards or walkways.
- Check that the supporting structure is sound and level before placing panels; do not overload the roof with stored materials.
- Handle with two or more people; hold by the long sides and keep the panel under control so it does not catch the wind.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves, safety footwear, a hard hat, goggles and suitable respiratory protection when generating dust.
- Keep clear of power lines and locate any hidden services before drilling.
- Carry out cutting and drilling in well-ventilated areas, using appropriate tools and waste collection.
- Use compatible fixings and sealants as specified by the manufacturer; tighten without deforming the panel.
- Cordon off and signpost the area below the work to prevent others passing through.
Storage and maintenance
- Store on a flat, level surface, with uniform supports and protected edges.
- Protect from the weather and prolonged direct sunlight; cover packs allowing ventilation and secure them against the wind.
- Do not over-stack; use spacers and avoid sagging.
- Transport with suitable straps and lifting points; do not drag the panels.
- Remove cutting debris and dirt to prevent slips and damage to sealants.
- Periodically inspect fixings, joints and flashings; replace any loose or damaged components.
- Clean with water and mild detergent; avoid abrasives, aggressive solvents and very high-pressure jets.
- After hail or impacts, check for possible cracks before accessing the roof again.
Restrictions on use
- Do not use the panels as a working platform, anchor point or for frequent traffic.
- Do not carry out improvised drilling or cut-outs; follow the manufacturer's guidance for drilling and sealing.
- Do not work during thunderstorms or in reduced visibility.
- Keep intense heat sources, open flames or sparks away from combustible panels and sealants.
- Do not use panels with cracks, severe dents, deformations or visible corrosion.
- Do not leave loads or heavy objects stored on the roof.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area and the fall zone.
- Roof work should be carried out by competent persons with appropriate protective equipment.
