Shooting Targets
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Ricochets and projectile fragmentation upon impact with hard, damaged or unsuitable surfaces.
- Target perforation and projectile pass-through if there is no backstop capable of stopping it, posing a risk to people, animals and property.
- Tipping over or detachment of the target due to unstable fixings, with the possibility of impacts outside the safe area.
- Cuts or pinches when handling edges, chains, hinges or mechanisms of reactive targets.
- Exposure to lead residues and metallic particles from impacts and splashback.
- Fire risk when using tracer ammunition or generating sparks on dry ground.
- Noise nuisance and hearing damage during prolonged practice, especially in enclosed spaces.
Safe use
- Use the target only with the type of weapon or projectile specified by the manufacturer (firearm, air gun, bow, crossbow).
- Position the target in front of a backstop that will stop projectiles or arrows and in a safe shooting direction, keeping the area behind and to the sides clear.
- Observe the minimum distances recommended by the manufacturer; avoid shooting at metal targets from very close range.
- Inspect before each use: remove the target if it shows deep dents, cracks, corrosion or deformations that promote ricochets.
- Ensure a stable fixing at an appropriate height; avoid improvised stands that may move or tip over.
- Do not use projectiles harder or more powerful than recommended (e.g., steel cores) nor armour-piercing ammunition on targets not designed for it.
- Always point in a safe direction and confirm that there are no people, animals or objects at risk of impact on the line of fire.
- Wear eye protection and, where appropriate, hearing protection. Keep hands away from the front of the target while shooting.
- Avoid shooting if the target is wet, icy or covered with materials that could promote ricochet.
Storage and maintenance
- Store targets in a dry, ventilated place to minimise corrosion and material degradation.
- Periodically clean the surface to remove lead residues and metallic dust; wear gloves and wash your hands after handling.
- Check hardware, chains, hinges and stands; re-tighten or replace worn or damaged parts before reuse.
- Protect impact surfaces during transport and avoid impacts that may deform the target.
- For paper or cardboard targets, avoid moisture and keep them flat. For polymer targets, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or extreme temperatures.
- If repainting metal targets, do so outdoors or in well-ventilated areas and allow them to dry completely before use.
- Dispose of heavily deteriorated targets and collect fragments and projectile remnants for disposal at appropriate collection points.
Restrictions on use
- Not a toy. Keep out of reach of children; children should only use it under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.
- Do not use near public roads, dwellings, vehicles, livestock routes or thoroughfares. Mark out and signpost the shooting area when necessary.
- Do not modify the target or its supports; alterations may compromise its strength and safety.
- Do not use tracer or pyrotechnic ammunition on targets in environments with dry vegetation or combustible materials.
- Do not climb, sit or lean on the target or its supports.
- Avoid use when fatigued, under the influence of alcohol, or of substances that reduce alertness.
- Do not use in conditions of poor visibility or where ricochets are likely (adjacent hard surfaces, stone, metal).
