Usage Warnings

Garden Hoses

Safety warnings and precautions

Key risks

  • Trips and falls from hoses left extended across walkways.
  • Hose whip or sudden disconnection if the tap is opened/closed abruptly or disconnected while the line is pressurised.
  • Slips on wet surfaces and puddles during watering.
  • Leaks or ruptures due to kinks, pinching, ageing, excess pressure or frost.
  • Very hot water can build up in hoses exposed to the sun, with a risk of unpleasant hot splashes.
  • Minor pinches or cuts when handling connectors and fittings.
  • Electrical hazard when spraying near sockets, extension leads or powered appliances.
  • Unintended exposure to residues of fertilisers or pesticides if the same hose is used for multiple tasks.
  • Non-potable water that may contain bacteria or sediment after periods of inactivity.

Safe use

  • Check the condition of the hose and its connectors before each use; replace any parts that are cracked, swollen or leaking.
  • Connect with the tap closed, hold the nozzle and open the water gradually; avoid leaving the hose pressurised unattended.
  • Uncoil fully and avoid knots or sharp bends; use guides or corner protectors to prevent straining the hose.
  • Keep the spray away from people, pets, sockets and electrical appliances.
  • After sun exposure or long periods without use, run the water for a few seconds away from people and delicate plants to purge stagnant or overheated water.
  • Do not tug the hose to move it; pull it gently along the ground or use a cart/reel.
  • Use compatible accessories and connectors in good condition to prevent leaks and disconnections.
  • If used with fertilisers or pesticides, rinse the hose and nozzle thoroughly after each use and consider dedicating a hose exclusively for that purpose.

Storage and maintenance

  • After watering, turn off the tap, release the pressure and drain any remaining water to prevent swelling and bad odours.
  • Coil without twists and store in the shade, protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Do not leave the hose crushed under heavy objects or trapped in doors or against sharp edges.
  • In cold weather, disconnect, empty and store in a dry, frost-free place.
  • Clean the exterior periodically and check seals and washers; replace any worn ones to maintain watertightness.
  • For leaks or cuts, use appropriate repair kits or replace the affected section; avoid makeshift fixes that may fail under pressure.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not use the hose for drinking water or food preparation unless expressly stated by the manufacturer.
  • Do not connect it to pressure washers or other high-pressure equipment unless it is specifically designed for this.
  • Do not use with very hot water, steam, fuels, solvents or harsh chemicals.
  • Do not bring the hose close to flames, very hot surfaces or sharp edges.
  • Do not leave the hose extended in walkways; coil it away after use to prevent tripping.
  • Keep out of reach of children when not in use; children should only handle it under adult supervision.
