Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Weight and bulk of acoustic pianos: risk of injury when moving them and of tipping over if not properly stabilised.
- Finger pinching in the key cover, hinges, music rests and folding stands.
- Electrical risk in electronic models due to moisture, damaged cables, unsuitable adaptors or obstructed ventilation.
- Hearing damage from high volumes, especially with headphones.
- Trips and falls caused by power leads, pedals and audio cables.
- Strain or posture-related injuries during long sessions or with improper bench/stand heights.
- Risks with batteries (in some keyboards): leaks, overheating or incorrect placement.
Safe use
- Place the instrument on a firm, level surface. Use stable, locked stands and benches; secure the keyboard to the stand if the design allows.
- Keep the area clear and route cables to avoid snags and trips. Avoid covering the adaptor or placing it where it may overheat.
- Plug into a socket in good condition. Avoid overloaded extension leads and unplug by pulling the plug, never the cable.
- Keep liquids away. Use the equipment with dry hands and never when it is wet.
- Adjust the volume gradually. With headphones, start at minimum and take breaks to protect your hearing.
- Lower the key cover slowly and in a controlled manner. Watch your fingers when folding/unfolding music rests and stands.
- To move the instrument, clear the route, lock the castors if fitted and lift with several people holding solid areas; do not drag or pull on controls or covers.
- If you notice a burning smell, sparks, unusual noises or excessive heat, switch off and unplug immediately.
- Do not open the casing or attempt DIY repairs.
Storage and maintenance
- Store and use indoors in dry, ventilated areas, away from moisture, heat sources and direct sunlight. For acoustic pianos, maintain a stable temperature and humidity.
- Cover with a breathable cover to protect from dust, without blocking ventilation grilles on electronic models.
- Clean with the equipment unplugged, using a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh products and aerosols applied directly.
- Coil cables without sharp bends. Periodically check cables, plugs, legs and fastenings of stands and pedals; replace damaged components.
- If it runs on batteries, insert them with the correct polarity, do not mix types or new with used, remove them if it will not be used for a while and dispose of damaged ones at appropriate collection points.
- Engage the wheel brakes (if present) when the piano is stationary and protect the floor with suitable floor protectors.
Usage restrictions
- Primarily for indoor use. Avoid outdoors, bathrooms, very humid or dusty areas unless explicitly specified for the product.
- Do not place heavy objects or drinks on the instrument; do not cover ventilation grilles.
- Do not stand, sit or hang on the keyboard, key cover, music rest or stand.
- Do not exceed the load rating of the stand nor use damaged or unstable stands.
- Keep children and pets under close supervision; prevent them from playing with covers, keys, pedals or cables.
- Do not use the instrument if it has been dropped, is damaged or wet, or has frayed or exposed cables.
- If you experience postural discomfort, stop the activity, adjust the bench height and distance, and take regular breaks.
