Warnings and safety precautions
Main risks
- Cuts or pinches when handling lids, latches, hinges or rotating composters.
- Tipping or instability on uneven ground or in strong winds.
- Back injuries when lifting or tipping heavy material.
- Exposure to fungi, spores and bacteria from decomposing material; possible skin or respiratory irritation.
- Increase in internal temperature and release of vapours when opening after periods without ventilation.
- Attraction of insects or rodents if unsuitable scraps are added or the lid is left open.
- Leachate spills that can cause slips and bad odours.
Safe use
- Place the composter on a firm, level and well-ventilated surface, away from walkways and from sources of heat or flame.
- Secure the lid and latches after each use; in windy areas, consider anchoring it if appropriate.
- Use sturdy gloves and closed-toe footwear; consider a filter mask if dust or spores are generated when turning.
- Keep hands away from hinges, edges and turning mechanisms; open or rotate slowly to avoid pinches and sudden releases of vapour.
- Do not overload the container; use appropriate tools (spade, garden fork) and safe lifting techniques.
- Add only suitable organic waste, chopped; avoid meat, fish and oils to reduce pests and odours.
- Manage leachate: use a tray or collector if applicable and clean up spills immediately to prevent slips.
- Wash your hands after handling the compost and avoid touching your face, eating or drinking while handling it.
Storage and maintenance
- Regularly check the structure, lids, latches, hinges and support points; replace parts that are damaged or deformed.
- Keep the ventilation holes and drainage clear to prevent liquid build-up and bad odours.
- If it is not going to be used for a period, empty it, clean it and leave it dry; store accessories in a dry place and out of the reach of children.
- Protect the composter from strong winds; if it is tall or narrow, secure it to the ground or to a stable wall where possible.
- On cold or frosty days, handle lids and rigid plastics carefully to avoid forcing or breaking them.
- Lightly lubricate hinges or latches when necessary, avoiding the lubricant coming into contact with the compost.
Restrictions of use
- Exclusively for outdoor use and in well-ventilated spaces.
- Not suitable as a seat, step or platform; do not stand on or place weight on it.
- Do not introduce embers, hot ashes, cigarette butts, chemicals, glass, metals, plastics or treated wood.
- Do not move the composter when it is full; partially empty it before moving.
- Keep out of reach of small children and pets; adult supervision is required when opening or turning.
- People with asthma, respiratory allergies or compromised immune systems should avoid handling the contents.
- Do not use to store food, water or animal feed; avoid sanitary waste and pet faeces if the compost is intended for edible plants.
- Do not place on balconies or on surfaces with a risk of falling if the filled weight could compromise safety.
