Pond Lights

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Electric shock from damaged equipment, wet sockets or improper connections.
  • Water ingress into non-sealed luminaires or those with deteriorated seals, potentially causing failure and short circuit.
  • Overheating or burns if underwater lights are switched on out of water or become covered by mud or leaves.
  • Housing or glass breakage with a risk of cuts.
  • Trips or snags caused by cable runs around the pond.
  • Glare and disruption of the light cycle of fish and plants due to excessive night-time lighting.
  • Fire risk from makeshift joints or poorly located, unventilated transformers.

Safe use

  • Check that the product is suitable for outdoor use and, if used underwater, specifically rated for immersion.
  • Disconnect the power before installing, moving or cleaning; always handle with dry hands.
  • Use only compatible transformers, power supplies and connectors that are suitable for outdoor use; position electrical equipment in a dry, raised area protected from splashes.
  • Connect to a point with residual current device (RCD) protection where applicable.
  • Route and secure cables along safe paths, free from strain or pinching, away from sharp edges, pumps, filters and garden tools.
  • Aim spotlights to avoid direct glare and reflections; use timers to respect the pond's day/night cycle.
  • Do not switch on submersible luminaires out of water, and allow them to cool before touching.
  • Do not drill or open housings, or make DIY joints; use sealed accessories from the manufacturer when required.

Storage and maintenance

  • Isolate the power before any maintenance and wait for surfaces to cool.
  • Periodically clean algae and limescale with a soft cloth or soft brush; avoid abrasive or corrosive products.
  • Check cables, connectors and seals for cracks, hardening or corrosion; replace damaged parts without attempting makeshift repairs.
  • Watch for moisture or condensation inside the luminaire; at any sign of water ingress, remove the unit and check the seals before using it again.
  • Replace bulbs or modules only if permitted by the manufacturer and with compatible spares.
  • Keep transformers and junction boxes in ventilated, dry locations that are accessible for inspection.
  • If removed seasonally, dry the units thoroughly and store them indoors, with no weight on the cables and protected from frost and direct sunlight.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use in swimming pools, spas or bathing areas unless expressly stated by the product.
  • Do not use extension leads, power strips or sockets that are not suitable for outdoor use.
  • Do not stare at LEDs or high-intensity spotlights at close range.
  • Do not use the equipment if there is visible damage, a burning smell, sparking, or repeated tripping of the RCD.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets; do not allow them to handle cables, transformers or lights.
  • Do not cover luminaires with stones, soil, leaves or decorations that impede heat dissipation.
  • For fixed installations, buried cabling or integration with the garden's electrical network, it may be advisable to use a qualified installer.
