Usage Warnings
Tarpaulins and Covers for Outdoors
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Lift-off or 'sail' effect in wind, which can displace the tarpaulin and the items it covers.
- Trips or falls due to ropes, bungee cords or loose ends in walkways.
- Suffocation or strangulation if children or pets become entangled in the tarpaulin or cords.
- Build-up of water or snow that increases weight and may deform or collapse structures and furniture.
- Condensation and trapped moisture that promote mould, bad odours and corrosion of covered items.
- Cuts when handling near sharp edges; tears to the tarpaulin caused by sharp edges.
- Whiplash from elastic cords or tensioners if they snap back.
- Burns or fire if placed on hot surfaces, embers or operating appliances (e.g., barbecues or heaters).
- Slips when stepping on wet tarpaulins and risk of falls when covering tall items using a ladder.
- Accidental obstruction of vents, drains or frequently used access points.
Safe use
- Choose an appropriate size and place the tarpaulin on clean surfaces free of sharp edges; use corner protectors if necessary.
- Secure the tarpaulin at all designated points, distributing the tension and avoiding improvised knots that could come loose.
- Tighten without over-tensioning; when using tensioners or elastic cords, hold the ends firmly to prevent snap-back.
- Avoid installing or removing the tarpaulin in strong winds; if large or bulky, do so with two people.
- Provide a slight slope and drainage paths to prevent water pooling; safely remove excess water or snow.
- Do not cover appliances that are on or have been recently used; wait until they have fully cooled and keep ventilation outlets clear.
- Keep ropes and cords neatly stowed and out of walkways to reduce trips.
- Remove the cover before moving vehicles, bicycles, machinery or wheeled furniture.
- Wear gloves when handling to reduce the risk of cuts and abrasions.
- Check periodically that the fastenings remain secure, especially after wind or rain.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean with water and mild soap; avoid solvents, abrasive cleaners or stiff brushes that could damage the material.
- Dry completely before storing to prevent mould and bad odours.
- Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight when not in use.
- Roll without pronounced creases to prevent cracking; store ropes and tensioners separately to avoid tangles.
- Regularly inspect seams, eyelets and cords; replace worn or damaged parts.
- Repair small tears with suitable kits; remove from use if the damage compromises attachment strength or waterproofing.
- Keep away from rodents or pets that may chew through cords or the tarpaulin itself.
Usage restrictions
- Do not use as a structural element, lifting device, scaffolding or fall protection.
- Do not use as a habitable shelter, tent or toy; keep out of reach of unsupervised children.
- Do not cover people or animals or create airtight enclosures; ensure ventilation when covering items sensitive to moisture or heat.
- Do not place over flames, embers, stoves, hot plates, exhausts or engines that are operating or have only just been switched off.
- Do not pierce or modify the anchoring points, as this may reduce the strength of the fastening.
- Do not position it so that it blocks doors, exits, drains or regular walkways.
- Do not use to contain liquids or as a load-retention barrier.
