Drill Bits
Safety warnings and precautions
Main hazards
- Cuts when handling sharp tips and cutting edges.
- Projection of fragments, chips and dust when drilling; possible drill bit breakage due to wear or misuse.
- Overheating of the bit and workpiece, with risk of burns and premature bit failure.
- Binding that can cause sudden drill kickback and loss of control.
- Entanglement of loose clothing, loose gloves or hair with the rotating bit.
- Damage to hidden cables, pipes or other services when drilling walls or floors.
- Sparks when working metal near flammable materials.
Safe use
- Choose a drill bit suitable for the material and compatible with the chuck; do not use one type of bit on a material it is not designed for.
- Inspect before use: discard bits that are bent, chipped, cracked or with a worn shank.
- Insert the bit fully into the chuck and tighten securely; remove the chuck key before starting.
- Secure the workpiece with a vice or clamps and clear the drilling area.
- Wear eye protection; use a dust mask when drilling materials that generate fine dust (e.g. brick, concrete or tile), and hearing protection where appropriate.
- Maintain a stable stance and hold the drill firmly; avoid applying lateral force to the bit.
- Work at moderate speed and pressure; let the bit cut. Take breaks to cool and, when drilling metals, use lubrication where recommended.
- Do not touch the bit immediately after use; it may be very hot.
- Use the hammer function only with suitable masonry bits.
- Before drilling, check for cables, pipes or other hidden services in the area.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean the bits after use, remove chips and dust, and dry them thoroughly.
- Protect them against corrosion with a light film of oil where appropriate.
- Store them in their case or rack to prevent them knocking against each other and to protect tips and cutting edges.
- Allow them to cool completely before storing.
- Check periodically for wear and damage; replace dull, bent or cracked bits.
- Sharpen only if you know the procedure; otherwise replace them or use a sharpening service to avoid damage.
- Keep the storage area dry and away from moisture and corrosive agents.
Restrictions of use
- Keep out of reach of children; not a toy.
- Do not use while wearing loose clothing, dangling jewellery or loose gloves during drilling; tie back long hair.
- Do not use on materials or diameters for which the bit is not designed; do not force it or use it as a lever.
- Do not modify, weld or grind the shank or cutting edges.
- Do not use drill bits as punches, chisels or other impact tools.
- Do not work near flammable gases, liquids or dust when sparks may be produced.
- Avoid use if you are fatigued or under the influence of alcohol or substances that reduce alertness.
