Warnings and safety precautions

Main risks

  • Pinching and finger cuts caused by closing jaws or cutting edges.
  • Flying fragments of wire or other pieces when cutting, posing an eye hazard.
  • Sudden slipping on smooth or round surfaces that may cause impacts or loss of control.
  • Breakage of jaws or the pivot if excessive force is applied or extensions are used, with possible metal splinters.
  • Electric shock if used near live conductors without adequate insulation.
  • Fatigue or pain in hands and wrists from prolonged use or awkward postures.
  • Burns when holding hot or freshly worked parts.
  • Sudden release on locking pliers with a risk of pinching.

Safe use

  • Choose the appropriate type and size for the task (cutting, gripping, long-nose, locking, etc.). Do not use them for unintended purposes.
  • Check before use: no cracks, no abnormal play, teeth or cutting edges not excessively worn, and handles in good condition.
  • Wear eye protection when cutting and gloves with good grip when appropriate.
  • Keep fingers away from the pinch zone and hold the tool with a firm grip and a stable stance.
  • On adjustable pliers, set the opening so the jaws bear fully on the workpiece.
  • When cutting, point the end that may spring off away from your body and other people; cover it with a gloved hand or a cloth.
  • Apply pressure gradually; do not twist or lever with the cutting edge during the cut.
  • Do not add tubes or other extensions to the handles; do not strike with the pliers or use them as a hammer or spanner.
  • Do not work near energised conductors unless the tool is specifically insulated and in good condition; keep the handles dry and clean.
  • With locking pliers, adjust the pressure to avoid damage and release the lock in a controlled manner, pointing away from the body.
  • Whenever possible, secure the workpiece to reduce slipping.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean after each use to remove swarf, dust and debris; dry the tool if it has become wet.
  • Apply light lubrication to the joint for smooth movement and reduced wear.
  • Store the pliers closed or with a guard to prevent cuts and damage to the edges or teeth.
  • Store in a dry, ventilated place, away from moisture; prevent corrosion.
  • Keep the handles free of grease to ensure a good grip.
  • Periodically check screws or rivets and make sure there is no excessive play.
  • Do not overheat or aggressively regrind the edges; if they are badly damaged or there are cracks, replace the tool.
  • Remove chemical residues after use to prevent deterioration.

Restrictions of use

  • Not suitable for electrical work unless marked as insulated and in good condition.
  • Do not use as a lever, chisel, screwdriver, spanner or hammer, nor for striking.
  • Do not cut hardened or high-hardness materials if the model is not designed for it.
  • Do not grip rotating parts or bring the tool close to moving machinery.
  • Do not lift, suspend or carry loads with pliers or pincers.
  • Do not modify the tool (weld, drill, add extensions) or use it if the handles are damaged.
  • Do not work on red-hot parts or expose the tool to direct flames.
  • Keep out of the reach of children; if used by minors, only under adult supervision.
