Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Contact with open flames, hotplates or heating elements: the fabric may ignite or char and cause burns.
- Steam or hot-liquid burns when used to handle hot containers; a damp cloth conducts heat very effectively.
- Cross-contamination and bad odours from prolonged use without washing or from using the same cloth for hands, crockery and surfaces, especially after contact with raw foods.
- Growth of mould and bacteria if left damp, balled up or in the sink.
- Slips due to drips or from leaving wet cloths on the floor.
- Colour transfer or lint on crockery and worktops, especially during initial uses or with strong colours.
- Mild skin irritation from residues of detergents, fabric softeners or bleach.
Safe use
- Keep them away from open flames, burners, grills, toasters and hot pans or trays; do not leave them on the hob.
- Do not use as oven gloves or as thermal insulation unless explicitly stated for the product.
- Change them frequently during preparation and cleaning; keep separate cloths for hands, surfaces and crockery; avoid using them after contact with raw meat or fish.
- Rinse thoroughly after contact with cleaners and avoid mixing chemicals.
- Wring out after each use and hang them flat to air; do not leave them balled up.
- Remove any loose threads or trims that could snag; replace if they are very worn, scorched or have persistent odours.
- Avoid covering appliance ventilation slots or air outlets with cloths or napkins.
Storage and care
- Follow the care instructions on the label and, if colours are likely to run, wash before first use.
- Wash regularly, especially after contact with raw foods, fats or visible dirt.
- Air-dry completely or tumble dry as appropriate; do not store damp or in enclosed spaces.
- Wash deep colours separately for the first few washes to minimise colour transfer.
- If they have absorbed oils or grease, wash thoroughly before placing in the tumble dryer.
- Store clean and dry in a ventilated place, away from heat sources and chemicals.
- Check periodically and discard any that show mould, persistent unpleasant odours, scorching or tears.
Restrictions on use
- Not suitable for direct contact with flames, heating elements, grills, ovens or switched-on hobs.
- Do not place in an oven or microwave, or use to cover hot cookware.
- Do not use as personal protective equipment or as pot holders for very hot containers.
- Do not use to strain food or to handle solvents, petrol or other flammable liquids.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets when wet or soaked with cleaning products; do not cover the face with cloths or napkins.
- Do not use on food if they shed lint or have loose seams.
