  • Snap-back and impact from lines under tension when released, failing or becoming snagged.
  • Entanglement of lines, fenders or other items with the propeller or rudder.
  • Loss of secure attachment or damage if mooring accessories, ladders or mounts are installed incorrectly.
  • Electrical risk in accessories with electrical components due to moisture, loose connections or damaged cables.
  • Impacts from loose accessories moving due to swell or manoeuvres.
  • Skin or eye irritation from improper use of adhesives, sealants or maintenance sprays.

Safe use

  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each accessory.
  • Before casting off, check fastenings, closures and the condition of lines, straps, carabiners and fenders where applicable.
  • Stow and secure accessories so they do not obstruct walkways or trail in the water.
  • Keep hands and clothing away from pinch points when tensioning or engaging parts; release tension in a controlled manner and stay out of the snap-back zone.
  • Wear gloves when handling lines and hardware and non-slip footwear on deck; consider wearing a lifejacket when working at the rail.
  • Switch off the engine and remove the key when working near the propeller or when untangling lines at the stern.
  • For electrical accessories, disconnect power before installing or inspecting and avoid operating with visible moisture.
  • Use adhesives and sealants in well-ventilated areas and avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Storage and maintenance

  • Rinse with fresh water after use in salt water and allow to dry completely before storage.
  • Periodically check for wear, corrosion, cracks, stitching and plastic parts damaged by the sun; replace anything that is not in good condition.
  • Store lines coiled, free of knots and twists, in ventilated bags or lockers protected from the sun.
  • Lubricate hardware and threads with suitable products and wipe off excess to avoid slippery surfaces.
  • Protect and dry electrical accessories when not in use; inspect connectors and cable sheaths.
  • Keep adhesives, sealants and aerosols tightly closed, in a cool place and away from heat sources and flames.
  • Clean and dry canvases, covers and upholstery to prevent mould; do not store them damp.
  • Check the pressure and condition of inflatable accessories where applicable.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not exceed the recommended loads or use lines or hardware to hoist people or tow beyond their intended purpose.
  • Do not modify, drill or cut accessories other than as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use accessories showing signs of damage, deformation, broken stitching, advanced corrosion or exposed or frayed wiring.
  • Do not leave loose lines hanging into the water or accessories that could interfere with the rudder, propeller or visibility.
  • Do not use electrical accessories if you detect moisture, sparking or a burning smell.
  • Do not allow minors to handle tensioned lines, carabiners, tools or electrical components without supervision.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage plastics, rubber or fabrics of the accessory.
  • Do not use ladders, platforms or handholds until you have confirmed they are firmly secured before boarding or disembarking.
