Main risks
- Falls, slips and trips on deck due to wet surfaces and poorly stowed accessories or lines.
- Trapping, pinching and cuts when handling hardware, carabiners, blocks or hinges.
- Snap-back and impact from lines under tension when released, failing or becoming snagged.
- Entanglement of lines, fenders or other items with the propeller or rudder.
- Loss of secure attachment or damage if mooring accessories, ladders or mounts are installed incorrectly.
- Electrical risk in accessories with electrical components due to moisture, loose connections or damaged cables.
- Impacts from loose accessories moving due to swell or manoeuvres.
- Skin or eye irritation from improper use of adhesives, sealants or maintenance sprays.
Safe use
- Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each accessory.
- Before casting off, check fastenings, closures and the condition of lines, straps, carabiners and fenders where applicable.
- Stow and secure accessories so they do not obstruct walkways or trail in the water.
- Keep hands and clothing away from pinch points when tensioning or engaging parts; release tension in a controlled manner and stay out of the snap-back zone.
- Wear gloves when handling lines and hardware and non-slip footwear on deck; consider wearing a lifejacket when working at the rail.
- Switch off the engine and remove the key when working near the propeller or when untangling lines at the stern.
- For electrical accessories, disconnect power before installing or inspecting and avoid operating with visible moisture.
- Use adhesives and sealants in well-ventilated areas and avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Storage and maintenance
- Rinse with fresh water after use in salt water and allow to dry completely before storage.
- Periodically check for wear, corrosion, cracks, stitching and plastic parts damaged by the sun; replace anything that is not in good condition.
- Store lines coiled, free of knots and twists, in ventilated bags or lockers protected from the sun.
- Lubricate hardware and threads with suitable products and wipe off excess to avoid slippery surfaces.
- Protect and dry electrical accessories when not in use; inspect connectors and cable sheaths.
- Keep adhesives, sealants and aerosols tightly closed, in a cool place and away from heat sources and flames.
- Clean and dry canvases, covers and upholstery to prevent mould; do not store them damp.
- Check the pressure and condition of inflatable accessories where applicable.
Restrictions on use
- Do not exceed the recommended loads or use lines or hardware to hoist people or tow beyond their intended purpose.
- Do not modify, drill or cut accessories other than as specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not use accessories showing signs of damage, deformation, broken stitching, advanced corrosion or exposed or frayed wiring.
- Do not leave loose lines hanging into the water or accessories that could interfere with the rudder, propeller or visibility.
- Do not use electrical accessories if you detect moisture, sparking or a burning smell.
- Do not allow minors to handle tensioned lines, carabiners, tools or electrical components without supervision.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage plastics, rubber or fabrics of the accessory.
- Do not use ladders, platforms or handholds until you have confirmed they are firmly secured before boarding or disembarking.
