Warnings and safety precautions
Main risks
- The post box falling or coming loose due to inadequate fixing, with a risk of injury or property damage.
- Trapping and pinching at hinges, lids and slots when opening or closing.
- Minor cuts from sharp edges, protruding screws or damaged parts.
- Tipping of post-mounted models if not correctly anchored or weighted.
- Weather-related deterioration (corrosion, loosening of fixings) that may compromise stability.
- Lock jamming or key breakage caused by forcing it closed or open.
- Bumps or trips if installed at a height or in a location that encroaches on walkways.
- Risk of ingestion of small parts (screws, keys, caps) by children or pets.
Safe use
- Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions before installing or using the post box.
- Choose a firm, stable surface; ensure it can support the weight of the post box and its contents.
- Before drilling, check there are no cables or pipes in the wall or fence.
- Wear gloves and, where appropriate, eye protection during installation and handling.
- Position the post box at a height that does not pose a risk of head injury and allows the door to open without encroaching on walkways.
- Keep fingers away from the slot and hinges; use the handle to open and close.
- Do not overload the post box; remove bulky mail to avoid straining hinges and fixings.
- Do not force the lock; use the correct key and turn gently.
- For post-mounted models, secure it to the ground as per the manufacturer's instructions, and do not use it as a seat, step or support.
- In windy areas, hold the door or lid when opening to prevent sudden slams.
Storage and maintenance
- If not yet installed, store it in a dry, ventilated place, protected from dust and moisture.
- Keep keys and small parts out of reach of children and pets.
- Periodically check screws, fixings, hinges and the condition of the post; tighten or replace any loose or damaged components.
- Inspect for rust, dents or sharp edges; repair or replace affected parts.
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap; avoid abrasive or corrosive products that may damage the finish.
- Lubricate hinges and the lock with the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer to prevent jamming.
- In winter, remove ice and snow from the lid and slot to avoid blockages or breakage.
- If the lock repeatedly fails or the key becomes deformed, replace the lock to prevent accidental breakage.
Restrictions of use
- Do not allow children to play with the post box, insert their fingers into the slot or climb onto the post.
- Do not use the post box to store valuables, hazardous products, liquids, food or medication.
- Do not install the post box on unstable, heavily deteriorated surfaces or those that cannot adequately support the fixings.
- Do not modify the structure, drill in areas not intended by the manufacturer, or replace the lock with incompatible parts.
- Do not use flames, solvents or inappropriate tools to free or de-ice the lock.
- Do not position it where it obstructs doors, emergency exits, narrow corridors or vehicle turning areas.
- In very humid or saline environments, increase the inspection and maintenance frequency; if you detect advanced corrosion, stop using it until repaired or replaced.
- Do not leave the lid or door open in walkways or in strong winds.
