Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Overload that may cause the cable, strap or chain to fail and the load to fall.
- Sudden snap-back of the line if it breaks or the hook comes free, posing an impact hazard.
- Entrapment of hands, fingers, clothing or hair in the drum, rollers, gears or pulleys.
- Uncontrolled lowering or movement of the load due to brake failure, jamming or poor securing.
- Instability of the load or anchor point due to side pull, misalignment or an unsuitable base.
- Electrical hazard and overheating in electric models and their wiring.
- Cuts, pinches and burns from broken wires, sharp edges or parts heated by friction.
Safe use
- Check the rated capacity of the winch and each accessory; use only solid, suitable anchorage points.
- Inspect before use: line free from broken strands, tears or deformed links; hooks with safety latches; fixings and fasteners secure.
- Cordon off the work area and keep everyone clear of the line of pull and the load path.
- Use protective equipment: heavy-duty gloves, eye protection and safety footwear; a safety helmet when lifting is involved.
- Align the pull with the winch and avoid sharp angles or contact with edges; use suitable pulleys and shackles when the load needs to be re-routed.
- Apply tension progressively and steadily; avoid jerks and shock loading. Stop the operation if you notice unusual noises, vibrations or behaviour.
- Keep hands clear of the drum and rollers; do not guide the cable by hand. Use remote controls or levers provided by the manufacturer.
- When lifting, do not stand beneath the load; use tag lines to guide it and secure the load before releasing tension.
- On electric models, check the condition of wiring, connections and stop devices. Avoid water exposure if the equipment is not rated for it.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean and dry the equipment after use, especially if exposed to mud, salt or moisture, to prevent corrosion and deterioration.
- Spool the line evenly, without knots or pronounced crossovers, and store the winch with no tension applied.
- Periodically check brakes, pawls, hook latches, fasteners and anchorage points. Replace damaged components immediately.
- Replace the line if it shows broken strands, deformation, cuts, abrasion, corrosion or open links. Do not attempt to repair cables, chains or hooks with welding or makeshift splices.
- Lubricate and protect moving parts according to the manufacturer's instructions and use products compatible with the line material.
- On electric models, disconnect the power before any adjustment or cleaning and allow the motor to cool if it has overheated.
- Carry out a no-load test after maintenance or component changes to verify correct operation.
- Store in a dry, stable place and out of reach of children.
Restrictions of use
- For lifting or pulling loads only. Not intended for lifting people or for use as a fall-arrest system.
- Do not exceed the stated maximum load, nor use unapproved levers or extensions on cranks or controls.
- Do not operate with the cable fully unspooled; keep the minimum wraps on the drum as specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not use the equipment with a twisted line, over unprotected sharp edges or with extreme angles.
- Do not leave loads suspended unattended, and do not leave the winch under tension when the work is finished.
- Do not use in potentially explosive atmospheres or near intense sources of heat.
- Avoid use in heavy rain, ice or high winds if these compromise control and visibility.
- Use restricted to adults with appropriate training; keep children and pets away from the work area.
