Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Impacts, entrapment and cuts to hands or feet during handling due to the weight and sharp edges.
  • Overexertion and back injuries when lifting or moving heavy covers.
  • Falls to a lower level if the cover is left open, displaced or not properly seated.
  • Trips or slips if the surface is wet, icy or not flush with the surrounding surface.
  • Risk in areas with pedestrian or vehicle traffic during opening or closing if the area is not signposted.
  • Exposure to odours or possible gases when opening manholes or enclosed chambers.

Safe use

  • Check that the size, shape and frame are compatible with the chamber or manhole before installation.
  • Use suitable lifting aids (lifting keys, hooks or lifting points) and, if it is heavy, work in pairs or use mechanical lifting aids.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of the closing path; do not place fingers under the cover when seating it.
  • Signpost and cordon off the work area; do not leave the opening unattended.
  • Open and close from a stable posture with a firm grip; avoid levering with unsuitable tools.
  • Before allowing passage, check that the cover seats fully, does not rock and, where applicable, is locked or secured.
  • On opening, allow initial ventilation of the chamber and avoid leaning directly over it for the first few moments.
  • Outdoors, take extra care in rain, ice or mud that may reduce footing.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store covers and frames on a flat, stable surface; do not store them upright or near edges where they could tip over.
  • Avoid high or unstable stacks; protect edges and seating faces to prevent damage.
  • Protect from impacts, dirt and agents that may corrode or degrade the material.
  • Keep the seating and frame clean: remove sand, leaves and debris that prevent proper closure.
  • Periodically check for cracks, deformations, play, loose hinges or fastenings, and deteriorated seals; replace damaged parts.
  • In areas of traffic, remove any water, ice or grease accumulated on the cover to reduce the risk of slipping.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use the cover in openings with dimensions or frames different from those intended.
  • Do not subject it to loads, impacts or traffic greater than those expected at the installation location.
  • Do not modify, drill or cut the cover or frame, nor use it as a support for machinery or as a work platform.
  • Do not open or handle on roads with traffic without adequate signage and assistance from another person when necessary.
  • Do not allow children to handle the cover or go near open apertures.
  • Do not use the cover if it shows visible damage that affects its stability or closure.
