Usage Warnings

Colanders and Drainers

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Burns from hot water or steam when draining very hot liquids.
  • Splashes and spills due to instability, overloading or slippery surfaces.
  • Minor cuts from edges, metal wires or damaged mesh.
  • Warping or deterioration from contact with direct heat sources or very hot oil in models not rated for it.
  • Pinching or trapping in folding models or those with mechanisms (e.g. salad spinners).
  • Cross-contamination and bacterial growth due to insufficient cleaning or poor drying of the mesh and seams.

Safe use

  • Place the colander securely in the sink or over a bowl; hold it firmly and pour away from your body and face.
  • Wear heat-resistant gloves or oven mitts and keep handles dry to prevent slipping.
  • Do not overload; drain in batches if the volume or weight is high.
  • Check that the material can withstand the food's temperature; if not specified, avoid pouring boiling oil.
  • Avoid contact with flame, heating elements or a hot hob; do not use it as a cooking vessel.
  • For fine mesh, use soft utensils and do not scrape with sharp objects to avoid damage.
  • For folding models or those with a lid or spinning mechanism, ensure it is properly closed, keep fingers clear of hinges, and stop the spin before opening.
  • Match the colander size to the container to prevent tipping; if resting over a pot, take extra care with rising steam.

Storage and maintenance

  • Wash before first use and after each use, cleaning the mesh, edges and seams thoroughly.
  • Dry completely to prevent rust, bad odours or mould, especially on the mesh and in crevices.
  • Regularly check handles, rivets and mesh; stop using it if you notice breaks, loose wires or loose parts.
  • Avoid very abrasive scourers and harsh products that could scratch or damage the materials.
  • If it is detachable (e.g. a salad spinner), separate the parts for a thorough clean and reassemble only when dry.
  • Check whether it is dishwasher safe; if not specified, wash by hand with warm water and mild detergent.
  • Store in a dry, ventilated place, without weight on top that could deform the body or mesh, and away from heat and direct sunlight.

Restrictions of use

  • Keep out of the reach of children; use only with adult supervision when handling hot liquids.
  • Do not use in an oven, microwave, on a hob or over a flame, nor leave it in or on the pot while boiling.
  • Do not use as a step, stand or tool for other purposes.
  • Do not use to filter non-food substances, solvents or industrial greases.
  • People with reduced mobility or heat sensitivity should get help when handling large or very hot quantities.
  • If it shows cracks, warping or loose mesh, do not use it.
