Usage Warnings

Candles and Candle Holders

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Fire caused by proximity to combustible materials such as curtains, papers, textiles or dried decorations.
  • Burns from contact with the flame, liquid wax or a hot candle holder.
  • Toppling of the candle or candle holder and spillage of hot wax onto surfaces.
  • Breakage of glass containers due to thermal shock, with possible projection of fragments.
  • Smoke and soot that can stain walls and affect air quality in poorly ventilated rooms.
  • Nasal irritation or respiratory discomfort caused by fragrances or aromatic oils.
  • Damage to furniture or surfaces (marks, discolouration or burns) from heat or dripping wax.
  • Access by children or pets, with a risk of burns, ingestion of small parts, or tipping over.

Safe use

  • Place the candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant base, away from the edge of tables or shelves.
  • Keep a sufficient distance from curtains, walls, low ceilings and other objects; leave clear space above and around.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets; place candles where they cannot reach them or knock them over.
  • Use a suitably sized candle holder that catches wax and allows ventilation; avoid enclosing the flame in containers without openings.
  • Trim the wick to a short, straight length before lighting to reduce excessive flame, smoke and dripping.
  • Avoid draughts that cause the flame to flicker, promote dripping or overheat the container.
  • Do not move the candle when it is lit or when the wax is liquid; wait for it to cool and solidify.
  • Remove matches and wick trimmings from the wax pool to prevent irregular flames and smoke.
  • Do not burn candles in a glass or container right down to the bottom; leave a small layer of wax to prevent overheating of the container and the surface.
  • Light and extinguish with care; a candle snuffer helps prevent wax splashes and unnecessary smoke.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store candles in a cool, dry, dark place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight to avoid warping or discolouration.
  • Keep candles upright and, if possible, protected from dust; clean the surface and the wick before each use.
  • Allow candle holders and containers to cool completely before handling or cleaning.
  • Remove solidified wax from candle holders carefully, without forcing or scraping glass with objects that could scratch it.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes (for example, do not pour cold water onto a hot glass) to prevent breakage.
  • Check candle holders periodically: if they show cracks, warping or instability, do not use them.
  • Ventilate the room after use, especially when several candles are lit or when using scented candles.

Restrictions of use

  • Do not use candles near aerosols, solvents, alcohol or other flammable vapours.
  • Do not use candles as a source of heating or to dry garments or objects.
  • Do not place lit candles inside cupboards, closed shelves, unventilated recesses or on electrical appliances.
  • Do not use cracked, unstable or improperly sized candle holders for the candle.
  • Avoid prolonged burning without breaks; allow everything to cool before relighting.
  • If you notice irritation, headache or discomfort from the fragrance or smoke, extinguish the candle and ventilate the room.
  • Do not allow minors to light or handle candles; adult supervision must be constant whenever candles are lit.
  • If used outdoors, protect them from the wind and place them on stable, heat-resistant surfaces.
