Usage Warnings

Braking System Tools

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Crushing or the vehicle falling due to improper securing or lifting when working on the brake system.
  • Burns from touching discs, callipers or drums that are still hot after driving.
  • Eye, skin or respiratory irritation from brake dust and cleaner vapours.
  • Damage from contact with brake fluid (corrosive to paint and irritating to skin and eyes).
  • Ejection of fluid or parts due to pressure in hydraulic lines or improperly connected pressurised tools.
  • Pinches, cuts or impacts when using piston retraction tools, spanners or pullers.
  • Loss of system effectiveness if air remains, there are leaks, or components are incorrectly assembled after the work.
  • Fire caused by using flammable aerosols near sparks, flames or very hot surfaces.
  • Slips due to liquid spills on the work area floor.

Safe use

  • Read the tool and vehicle instructions before starting, and work in a stable, clean and well-ventilated area.
  • Park on a level surface, chock the wheels, and support the vehicle with suitable stands; do not rely on the jack alone.
  • Allow the brakes to cool before handling discs, callipers or drums.
  • Use chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses and a filtering respirator when brake dust may be generated.
  • Do not clean brake dust with compressed air; remove it with a vacuum cleaner fitted with an appropriate filter or with slightly damp cloths.
  • Ensure hoses, bleed nipples and adaptors are in good condition and securely connected before applying vacuum or pressure; increase the pressure gradually.
  • Avoid operating the pedal or the handbrake while components are removed; on vehicles with electronic systems (ABS/EPB), disable functions as per the vehicle manual before working.
  • If handling brake fluid, use the type specified by the vehicle manufacturer, do not mix types and do not reuse extracted fluid; clean up any spills immediately.
  • Keep sources of ignition away when using cleaners or solvents; do not smoke during the work.
  • On completion, check for leaks, connect and secure all components correctly, restore pedal travel and firmness, and carry out a low-speed test in a safe area before driving normally.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean tools after each use, especially if they have been in contact with brake fluid or cleaners, and dry them thoroughly.
  • Periodically check seals, gauges, hoses and bleed nipples; replace any component that shows cracking, hardening, deformation or leaks.
  • Store kits in their case, in a dry, ventilated place, protected from dust and direct sunlight.
  • Keep aerosols and containers closed, upright and away from sources of heat or sparks.
  • Do not store equipment with residual pressure; release pressure and empty reservoirs after use.
  • Keep tools, funnels and hoses intended for the brake system separate and labelled to avoid cross-contamination of fluids.
  • Clean up spills immediately and dispose of used cloths and liquids at appropriate collection points; do not pour them down the drain.
  • Keep everything out of reach of children and pets.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use damaged or incomplete tools, or those without the correct adaptors for the vehicle.
  • Do not exceed the working pressures specified by the tool manufacturer, and do not modify the equipment.
  • Do not use improvised adaptors or hoses that do not fit securely to bleed nipples or reservoirs.
  • Do not work under the vehicle without secure, correctly positioned supports.
  • Do not apply heat or flames to brake components, nor use flammable cleaners near sources of ignition.
  • Do not clean brake dust with compressed air or with products not intended for this purpose.
  • Do not allow use by minors; these tools should be handled by persons with basic knowledge of brake system mechanics.
  • Do not drive if, after the work, the pedal feels spongy, brake warning lights are illuminated or leaks are observed; stop the vehicle safely and recheck the work.
