Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Cuts and punctures from blades, saws and sharp points.
- Pinching of fingers and hands when closing shears or adjusting mechanisms.
- Flying splinters, thorns, soil or small fragments towards the eyes when pruning or digging.
- Sprains and strains due to awkward postures, repetitive movements or prolonged use.
- Falls or slips on wet, uneven surfaces or those with plant debris.
- Loss of control due to cracked handles, loose screws or worn parts.
- Skin irritation from contact with sap, thorns or dirt; possible allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.
- Risk of electric shock when working near overhead power lines or outdoor electrical installations.
Safe use
- Inspect each tool before use: check for cracks, looseness or excessive rust.
- Wear sturdy gloves, safety glasses and closed-toe footwear, especially when pruning or sawing.
- Always cut away from your body and keep fingers clear of the blade's path.
- Use only the correct tool for each task; do not cut wire, metal or stone unless expressly stated.
- Do not apply excessive force or lever with tools not designed for it.
- Keep the work area clear and keep other people and pets at a safe distance.
- Engage safety locks and use sheaths or guards when transporting tools or when not in use.
- Work on stable surfaces; avoid overreaching or working above shoulder height with hand saws or shears.
- Do not carry loose tools in your pockets; carry them by the handle with the tip/blade pointing downwards and protected.
- Take regular breaks and alternate tasks to reduce fatigue and the risk of repetitive strain injuries (RSI).
Storage and maintenance
- Clean off soil and sap after each use and dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion.
- Apply light lubrication to hinges and moving parts when needed.
- Store tools with guards fitted and locks engaged, in a dry, well-ventilated place.
- Sharpen the blades using the method and angle recommended by the manufacturer, wearing gloves and using stable supports.
- Check and tighten screws, nuts and joints regularly; replace damaged parts with suitable spares.
- Inspect handles for cracks or splinters; if the damage compromises grip or stability, stop using the tool.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture or intense sunlight that may degrade handles and grips.
- Store out of reach of children and pets, preferably hung up or on a rack that prevents falls.
Restrictions on use
- Not toys; keep out of the reach of children. Use by minors only under adult supervision and with tools appropriate to their age and strength.
- Do not use if the tool is damaged, improperly adjusted, heavily rusted or without guards where these are required.
- Do not work at height, on unstable ladders or near edges without specific safety measures in place.
- Do not use under the influence of alcohol, medication that reduces alertness, or in situations of extreme fatigue.
- Do not work near power lines or cut branches that may be in contact with them.
- Do not use the tools for purposes other than gardening or beyond their intended capacity.
- Stop using the tool if you experience pain, numbness or loss of strength in your hands or wrists.
- People with known skin allergies should wear gloves and long sleeves to minimise contact with sap and thorns.
